Video Demonstrating "Slam Fire" and "The Fix" "Bustin' a Myth"  Original Russian SKS’s, Mfg’d. from 1945 to 1950, had a firing pin design that incorporated a return spring.(above pic) Why “later” Russian, Chinese, and all others do not have this design, with spring, is still a mystery. The design was changed to a “free-floating” firing pin in 1951. All countries that made SKS’s copied this second design, and with it, slam-fire and uncontrollable full-auto are much more likely! (even with your finger nowhere near the trigger) Removing all the carbon, dirt, and/or cosmoline may not be enough to insure the firing pin does not lock forward. The pic below is a cutaway SKS bolt, showing vividly the firing pin taper, and the taper in the bottom of hole in the bolt, that firing pin bottoms against. This is where a mechanical “lock-up” can occur, as any tapered pin driven into a like tapered hole is likely to lock the pin in place. (check “Morse Taper” tools in any Machine Shop)  In the early 1990’s we began altering original firing pins, and adding a return spring, on Russian and Chinese SKS’s that were being imported. This was when many reports of slam-fire and uncontrollable full-auto episodes were first being reported. In 2004, due to Internet demand, we began manufacturing and selling a SS replacement firing pin and spring that was simply a copy of an “altered” original firing pin.  Original later Russian. Newly manufactured, CNC machined and heat-treated 17-4 SS firing pin and “Wolff” spring are now available. Item 001 is a Drop-In fit with no alterations required. If you would like a Firing Pin that more closely copies the Original Russian Design, we offer our new Item 001M, pictured below, which requires a very small modification to your carrier. So if you are sending your bolt for FP Kit Installation, send the Carrier too, and we can machine it for this "best" version. Or you can have your Gunsmith do the machining or if mechanically inclined, you can do the modification yourself. Even with the modification, you could still go back to an original FP, should you choose to do so. Item 001M fits the same models as above, but requires the small carrier modification.      The cost of the Carrier Modification is a mere $10.00 + $3.00 additional shipping, so for a total of $60.00 you get the following: Item 001M Firing Pin Kit - Disassembly, Cleaning, Reaming Main Firing Pin Hole, Stoning the Bolt Face, Countersinking Firing Pin Hole on Bolt Face, Polish Extractor Face, Carrier Machining and Re-Assembly. Both the Bolt and Carrier come back to you ready to drop in and shoot. The Post Office (USPS) has a "Small Flat Rate Priority Box" that is the most inexpensive and simplest way to send the Bolt and Carrier, but other delivery services work well also. Or, if you’d like us to install the "Drop-In" FP kit for you, send just the bolt assembly with a check or money order for $47.00. This includes FP kit and installation. We disassemble, clean, stone bolt face lightly and countersink FP hole, polish extractor face, and reassemble with new FP kit. Once you receive your bolt assembly, it will be ready to just drop into your rifle then shoot. We also return your original firing pin.
